Do You Have TMD?

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD) is a condition that can make it difficult to eat, speak, and generally feel comfortable, impeding the operability of an individual’s jaw due to pain and various dysfunctional conditions. There are many symptoms commonly associated with the onset and/or occurrence of TMD, and it is important to be able to efficiently identify them, which will assist with treating the condition.

Pain and Tenderness in the Jaw and Jaw Joint Area

Reoccurring pain is the most common identifier of TMD and is typically intense enough to the point that it can cause stress and frustration if left untreated. Tenderness, soreness, and pain in the jaw and jaw joint area are directly related to the condition, as is aching in and around the ears. Surrounding neck and face pain is also a possibility when suffering from TMD.

Frequent Headaches

Frequent headaches and/or migraines is another common symptom associated with TMD, and on occasion, they can be more severe or distracting than normal. It is important to seek out appropriate treatment solutions to minimize the presence of headaches and/or migraines to guarantee your continued health and wellness.

Locked/Restricted Jaw

TMD can cause the jaw joints to effectively seize or “lock” up, resulting in restricted or outright paralyzed jaw functionality. You may also experience a clicking sound on occasion, which is yet another indicator of TMD.

Toothaches and Chewing Difficulties/Anomalies

The jaw joints and muscles directly control our chewing ability, so it is only natural that our teeth can be affected by TMD should it be present. If you are experiencing toothaches, chewing difficulties, or other problems such as unexplainable speech impediments due to odd soreness or pain, it is important to have your jaw inspected by a medical professional.
