Our treatment approach addresses the jaw dysfunction that’s triggering your headaches, rather than just treating the pain symptoms. Dr. Dahan performs a thorough clinical examination of your jaw joints, facial muscles, bite alignment, and occlusion to identify where tension, misalignment, or other jaw issues that may be contributing to your chronic headaches exist.
Treatment is personalized. Depending on your assessment, it may include:
- Custom oral appliances to reposition the jaw, prevent nighttime teeth grinding, and allow the TMJ to decompress
- Therapeutic exercises to stretch and strengthen the muscles supporting the jaw and neck
- Lifestyle and trigger modifications tailored to your specific headache pattern
- Therapeutic BOTOX® as a standalone or complementary treatment for patients with chronic migraines
Therapeutic BOTOX® for Migraines
Therapeutic BOTOX® works differently than painkillers instead of treating headaches after they start, it can prevent them from occurring in the first place. BOTOX® is the first FDA-approved preventative treatment for chronic migraines.
The treatment works by blocking pain signals (neurotransmitters) from reaching your head and neck area. When injected into specific facial and jaw muscles by Dr. Dahan, BOTOX® helps alleviate the muscle tension that triggers TMJ-related migraines. Most patients see improvement within 10-14 days after treatment, with effects lasting approximately 12 weeks.
Unlike oral medications, BOTOX® treatment is administered during brief office visits every 12 weeks. Treatments become more effective with each session, and many patients report fewer migraine days and reduced missed work or activities.
Key things worth knowing about therapeutic BOTOX® for migraines
- Treatment takes 10-15 minutes in-office, every 12 weeks
- Most patients see meaningful improvement within 10-14 days of their first session
- Results tend to improve with each subsequent treatment
- BOTOX® can be used alongside oral migraine medications without interference
Important: Oral appliances and BOTOX® both work. For patients who are already losing multiple days a month to migraines, the combined approach from the start tends to deliver faster relief. The appliance addresses the structural jaw issues; BOTOX® interrupts the pain cycle in the meantime. For people with less frequent headaches, starting with the appliance alone is often enough. But there’s no prize for going slowly when the pain is already severe.
